Violet Town

about

Violet Town is the third single from Elbury's forthcoming album, coming September 2021. Bass player Luke Mulhare lends his songwriting abilities and vocals to this country-guitar-rock narrative. This song is sung from his perspective as someone seeking refuge from a toxic relationship. Opening line: “I've got to stop falling for you” sets the scene for the struggle to find peace within.

Written during Elbury’s 2017 East Coast tour and inspired by happenings in the bass player's life at the time (and the actual township just outside of Shepparton, Victoria), Violet Town is a quaint imagining of a more simple and peaceful time.

lyrics

I’ve got to stop falling for you and all that you do.
My thoughts they turn blue, I’m tired of standing in the Melbourne rain, the hail and the sleet,
Running on the same old streets.
I give her all my mercy like the grey crowned babbler.
Shelter from the wind but not much else.
Are you the one for me? Or will anyone do?

Yeah watch us fall like two lonely people
Nothing good seems to last forever and ever
And that’s why I’m here in the lost and found
In Violet Town

Well we met in a ragged and roundabout way
You were always there but not really here
I remember it was a Wednesday and nightfall was closing in
We didn’t have far but you’d come close enough
We left north together and now we’re heading south
The past runs deep here, but I think she just runs

Yeah watch us fall like two lonely people
Nothing good seems to last forever and ever
And that’s why I’m here in the lost and found
In Violet Town
