Heroes & Villains

about

Heroes and Villains is the first single from Elbury's second LP, which will finally see the light of day in mid-2021. Inspired by those most-tawdry of reality TV offerings - the Bachelor and the Bachelorette - H&V is about the rules and roles of the courtship game and how it might look from the other side.

lyrics

These boys try to be
Heroes or villains.
Oh, white hats, black hats,
They must think we need that.

Good guys and bad boys,
A binary rendered
Show virtue to the former
But the latter wants surrender.

Courting is sport for them,
Easy relations, good-fellow-well-met.
All unconcerned, today you prevail?
Shake the hand of the man on your right
While we fight over what's left.

One for all until I win 'em all
Loving is gaming.
Oh, I'll be the forward one,
You be unobtainable.
Master the art of the artifice
Maintain balance.
A little red lipstick, some rouge,
And white innocence.

This is all poor theatre
Men lean at the bar when the battles begin.
Never assume a word that I say
Is anything more than a veil
Worn for the game.

Courting is sport for them,
Easy relations, good-fellow-well-met.
All unconcerned, today you prevail?
Shake the hand of the man on your right
While we fight over what's left.
